Well, yes...and no.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Did Census Records Ask About Citizenship? </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;">Well, yes...and no. It depends!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">In today's news, both the Washington Post and CNN published online articles about the Trump's Administration intent to include a question about citizenship on the 2020 Federal Census. CNN did mention in their article that several past censuses did include such a question. And it's become politicalized! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">See CNN article here: <a href="http://did%20census%20records%20ask%20about%20citizenship/?%20Well,%20yes....."> CNN article</a></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Washington Post article: <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2018/03/27/california-sues-trump-administration-over-decision-to-add-citizenship-question-to-census/?utm_term=.9b5161984a71">Post article</a></span><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Are we required to have a census? Yes, every ten years, according to the U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 2, Clause 3...</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;"><i>Clause 3: Representatives and direct Taxes shall
be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this
Union, according to their respective Numbers... The actual Enumeration shall be made within three
Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within
every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct. </i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Does that mean that we have to include citizenship in the census, as a demographic factor? Only when Congress and the Census Bureau decide that it is necessary to include it. And if you look at the other questions listed on all the censuses dating back to 1790, a wide variety of questions have been asked! From education, gender, age, employment, land ownership, slave ownership, where born, and so on.</span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">For us, as genealogists, having information about citizenship helps to determine the timeline of our ancestors' lives. Finding immigration and naturalization documents are part an integral part of our research. We are, indeed, a nation of immigrants!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">So, is that true? Did Census Records ever ask about citizenship? Yes to both questions. The 1820, 1830, 1890, 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses all ask if individuals are naturalized or not. Some ask if naturalized papers were taken out. </span><span style="font-size: large;">For example:</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">1820: asks for Foreigners not naturalized</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">1830: asks for Aliens--foreigners not naturalized</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">1890: asks whether naturalized, and if naturalization papers were taken out.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">1900: asks for year of immigration, number of years in the U.S., and if naturalized.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">1910: asks for year of immigration, and whether naturalized or alien.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">1920: asks for year of immigration, naturalized or alien, and year of naturalized (if naturalized)</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">1930: asks for year of immigration, and if naturalized or alien.</span></li>
</ol>

<span style="font-size: large;">International German Genealogy Conference</span><br />
<div align="center">
<em>(the IGGP icon is on the left)</em></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Last week I had the pleasure of attending the first ever International German Genealogy Conference, hosted by the Germanic Genealogy Society of St. Paul, MN and the International Germanic Genealogy Partnership (a collective of German genealogy societies). The nearly 700 attendees came from 41 US states, Australia, Brazil, and Germany. </div>
<br />
<div align="left">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Among the 28 speakers were Kim Ashford (one of the conference organizers), Kent Cutcomp (another organizer), Werner Esser, Debra Hoffman, Benjamin Hollister (from Australia), Baerbel Johnson (born in Germany and works in Salt Lake City), Ursula Krause (from Berlin), Michael Lacopo, Roger Minert, Jill Morelli, Stephen Morse, Paula Stuart-Warren, Ernest Thode, Toni Perrone, and Dirk Weissleder. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I had the pleasure of meeting Dirk Weissleder a few months back at the Southern California Genealogy Society library. He lives in Germany, but travels frequently promoting the International Germanic Genealogy Partnership (IGGP). Organizing this conference has been a dream of his for several years. As I write this, he is on his way to Australia. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One of my genealogy dreams came true on Thursday. For years I have been a member of the Minnesota Historical Society, and I have wanted to visit and do research in their library. It only took 4 trips to Minnesota to finally walk in!! (The previous visits was occupied by driving up to Duluth to meet with cousins who live in Duluth and Proctor). I was hoping to find my great-grandmother and her daughters listed in the microfilmed files of the Minnesota Women's Suffragette Association. Alas, they were not found, but I did find some early 1900's birth certificates that I wanted to obtain. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The opening event was a beirgarten social at the Germanic-American Institute in St. Paul on Thursday night. Lots of beer and sauerkraut and socializing. Although I'm not a beer drinker, I did enjoy the socializing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lots of great workshops to attend--and it was hard to decide which ones to sit in on. One that I chose to sit in on a talk about German directories--and no, it's not your typical phone book! In fact, these directories were published for decades <em>before</em> phone were invented! It's a great resource, as it gives family names, addresses, and even occupations. It was in these directories that I found that two of my great-great grandmothers listed as midwives. Yes, midwives are listed!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Speakers also presented on using parish records, DNA, region-specific (Pommerania, Palatine, etc.), using FamilySearch.org, using newspapers, surnames, guilds and other organizations, and social history.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My verdict: it was a great conference. The organizers did a great job, with no snafus at all. The conference was at the Minneapolis Marriott Northeast hotel, and I had a very nice small suite in that hotel. I was able to hook up--in person!--with some of my favorite genealogy people--including Jill Morelli, Baerbel Johnson, Warren Bittner, Gordon Seyfurst, and Pat Richley-Erickson (aka Dear Myrtle).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And the weekend came with an unexpected bonus--I got to meet one of my second cousins, Dan Wombacher and his wife Erin and son John. Dan's grandfather Elmer and my grandfather Clarence (aka Dutch) are brothers. They took me out to a lake-side dinner on Friday. What a treat it was!! BTW--I also have a 1st cousin named Dan Wombacher. His dad Patrick is one of my mother's brothers. What are the odds??</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And finally--the 2nd conference is scheduled for 2019 in Sacramento, California. Details to follow. I can't wait to register!!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And now I'm back in Los Angeles "enjoying" hot, humid, triple-digit weather. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Enjoy!</div>

Family History Center Microfilm Distribution:<br />
<em>to be discontinued!</em> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div align="left" style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div align="left" style="text-align: center;">
</div>
One of my favorite reasons to go to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City are the 2.5 million microfilms housed at the library. Because of these microfilms, I found census records, marriage records, church records probate and will records. These microfilms include records dating back to the late 1500's. For those who cannot make the trip to Salt Lake City, the library offered a great benefit--the ability to order the microfilms online and have them sent to the local genealogy library. Saves a lot on airfare to Salt Lake City.<br />
<br />
Bottom line--I <em>love </em>ordering the films, and I <em>love</em> using those films!<br />
<br />
Now, the Family History Library has announced that on September 1st, the library will no longer distribute (mail out) the microfilms. This should come as no surprise, since the microfilms are being digitalized for online use. Many are already online. Below is the link to their announcement.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.lds.org/callings/temple-and-family-history/familysearch-microfilm-discontinuation?lang=eng">https://www.lds.org/callings/temple-and-family-history/familysearch-microfilm-discontinuation?lang=eng</a><br />
<br />
Undoubtedly, this will also change how genealogists and family historians will use the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Their first floor has already changed dramatically to become an interactive experience for families, but does little for the more experienced genealogists who are committed to doing serious research. Hopefully, the other four floors of the library will still be one of our genealogy Meccas!<br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Los
Angeles County recently rolled out a new system for obtaining birth, death, and
marriage records. It’s no longer as simple and easy as before, especially if you
are ordering older copies of your ancestors’ records. Previously, all it took
was to submit an application with a check or money order to cover the costs of
copying the record. The county now requires more than just an application and
money. But first, let’s look at what records are available. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Records
dated after 1964, and are available immediately (same day service from the
county). <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>

very easy nor convenient, especially if you do not live in or near Los Angeles

you have to complete and send in the notarized Certificate of Identity. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>If you do not live in California, you must
have the notary strike out "California" on the Certificate of
Identity and put the state in which the form is notarized. It will be accepted

an Informational Certified Copy and you will not need notarization! </span> </div>

option is to order the birth and death certificates from the California Department
of Public Health (CDPH), located in Sacramento, the state capital. You can mail
in the application and a check or money order. No ID required, and no notarization.
And the office does not take walk-ins, as they do not have any customer service
counters. Only mail-in applications are accepted. It will take 4-6 weeks to receive
the certificates—a huge improvement from years ago when it took up to six months
or longer. Their website: <a href="http://www.cdph.ca.gov/certlic/birthdeathmar/Pages/CertifiedCopiesofBirthDeathRecords.aspx"><span style="color: blue;">http://www.cdph.ca.gov/certlic/birthdeathmar/Pages/CertifiedCopiesofBirthDeathRecords.aspx</span></a><o:p></o:p></span></div>

have used the CDPH, and I found it to be much more convenient than walking into
the Los Angeles County offices, which are known to be quite busy with long lines
and long wait times. But in their defense, we do live in a world where identity
theft is all too common. At least, it seems to me that the County of Los Angeles
is making an effort to minimize identity theft. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

I just received an awesome email that's worth sharing. The Board of Certification of Genealogists (BCG) and Legacy Family Tree Webinars are co-hosting a full day of <strong><em>FREE </em></strong>webinars on Friday, October 7, 2016. Here's what's cool about it--it's <em><strong>FREE</strong> </em>and can be viewed on your computer at home!! Five of the workshops are available--minus David McDonald's, which appears to be a hands-on only type of workshop. But that's okay. <br />
<br />
By the way--did I mention that it's <strong><em>FREE??? </em></strong>How cool is that?? So, all the details are below:<br />

also be broadcast online (free registration is required, see below). The board
is an independent certifying body and author of the updated 2014 Genealogy

If you do, take a look at the series of books by Steve Robinson, who combines genealogy and mystery. The latest is book 5 of his Jefferson Tayte novels called <em>Kindred.</em> To be honest, I have not read the first 4 books of the series--but don't let that stop you from reading them. <br />
The book is a fun read--once you get past the first couple of chapters when the story really starts to take off. The author incorporates several genealogical skills into the storyline. Granted, it won't change your life, but if you're looking for one more book to finish your summer reading, try any one of Robinson's books. And then enjoy the read!<br />

It's been a while, hasn't it? I've been busy doing blog posts for the Southern California Genealogy Society. Ever since I was elected to its board, it's been keeping me busy. That's a good thing. And I am still looking for items of this ol' blog.<br />
So here's today tidbit, courtesy of the Legal Genealogist, Judy Russell. She has some wonderful insights in the DNA results from Ancestry and 23andMe testing. So, here's the article:<br /><a href="http://www.legalgenealogist.com/2016/08/14/those-percentages-if-you-must/">http://www.legalgenealogist.com/2016/08/14/those-percentages-if-you-must/</a><br />
<br />
Enjoy!!Kathy Hollandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02779425763527459136noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-729608737543763802.post-47353895831319426932016-05-17T20:32:00.000-07:002016-05-17T20:32:01.014-07:00The Original 29: via the Genealogy RoadshowI'm currently watching the season premiere of <em>Genealogy Roadshow</em> on PBS. What a wonderful episode, so far!!!<br />
Josh Taylor assisted in helping a young woman of Navajo heritage, named Charlotte. She never knew her father and his family. Turns out that her paternal grandfather was one of the "<em>Original 29</em>", a group of native Navajo speakers who helped the US Government during WW2. The Navajo language is very complicated language and has no written alphabet and language. The US Government needed an unbreakable language to be used against the Japanese during the war. It turns out that every other language and code the government used would always be decoded and broken by the Japanese. At least until the US government hired the Navajo--<em>the Original 29</em>--and used their language to keep things coded. And it worked! The Japanese were never able to crack the Navajo code. <br />
Another high point was the discovery of family photos that Charlotte got to see for the first time. They were provided by her paternal aunt, Nancy. At the end of the segment, Charlotte met her Aunt Nancy for the time. <br />
But this is what we do as genealogists. We find the stories. And sometimes, we find relatives we did not know we had. And our world becomes a bigger place, and a more intimate place. What other hobby expands our world and makes it more intimate, at the same time??Kathy Hollandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02779425763527459136noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-729608737543763802.post-47993650207435211622016-05-15T19:31:00.000-07:002016-05-15T19:31:35.209-07:00Jamboree 2016 is almost here!Jamboree 2016--the annual conference hosted by the Southern California Genealogy Society--is almost here! It takes place June 3-6 at the Burbank Marriott hotel, right across the street from Burbank Airport. It can't get any easier to get to!<br />
<br />
And I'll be there--but this year as a member of the Southern California Genealogy Society board. I'm planning on attending as many of the German-related workshops as possible. I'm also volunteering for the APG helping people with research assistance.<br />
<br />
Looking forward to seeing friends from the ProGen group--a mix of alumns and current students for lunch. And seeing friends from the So Cal APG group. <br />
<br />
Looking forward to the Family Search breakfast on Saturday, and seeing Kenyatta Berry as the keynote speaker at the Saturday night banquet. <br />
<br />
And I plan on being thoroughly--and happily--exhausted by Saturday night. Sunday will be a different story--how can I attend more workshops and still make my friend's 80th birthday at noontime?? Hmmm.....<br />

Hi all,<br />
Received this email a couple of days ago....<br />
<br />
<b><span style="color: #699f3b; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">It’s here!
Family Tree Maker is BACK. <span style="color: blue;">Via its new owner, Software MacKiev.</span></span></b><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">All of us here at Software
MacKiev are happy to be taking up where Ancestry left off with Family Tree
Maker, the most widely used family history software of all time. We have
completed a small update to get the product back on the market and are pleased
to let you know its available RIGHT NOW. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><img border="0" src="http://mackiev.com/mailings/2016mar/images/ftm_jc_1x.jpg" id="_x0000_i1025" srcset="http://mackiev.com/mailings/2016mar/images/ftm_jc_1x.jpg 1x, http://mackiev.com/mailings/2016mar/images/ftm_jc_2x.jpg 2x" style="width: 318px;" /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<b><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">About our new FTM updates</span></b><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;"><br />
We have started with Ancestry’s FTM 2014 and FTM Mac 3 and, as a company of
engineers, we set our focus on stability and performance improvements. So we
swatted down some bugs. And we made the application more responsive – you will
find some actions that previously took minutes now take seconds. </span><br />
<b><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">New features</span></b><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;"><br />
We managed to sneak in just a few surprises, like 100 beautiful new backgrounds
you can use to make professional looking charts and reports. And we’ve
integrated a service for printing high resolution genealogy charts through the
good folks at Family ChartMasters. It’s a modest start, but we hope you will be
happy with our new updates. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<b><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Compatibility</span></b><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;"><br />
We made sure that our new updates are completely compatible with the latest
operating systems (Windows 10 and El Capitan). We’ve also made sure that your
old trees will open seamlessly. That there is nothing to move. That your
Ancestry account if you have one will continue to work with the new versions.
And that TreeSync and all the other things you have come to like about FTM are
still there for you. </span><br />
<b><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Where to Buy... and more</span></b><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;"><br />
See below how to get the updated editions, and some other information you may
find useful.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Thanks to all of you who have
welcomed us so warmly. It means a lot to us. A new chapter in Family Tree
Maker’s long and proud history begins today! <o:p></o:p></span><br />

Two people on each page are asked additional questions and their answers are placed at the bottom of that page. Very different from previous censuses. This is especially profound if one of your ancestors is one of the two listed. One of my aunts is one who gets featured, even though she was only 8 years old. Yes, there will be children as well as adults featured. <br />
To find which two are chosen, just look at the left-hand side of each page and find the two boxes that says "suppl quest." That means supplemental questions. And drop down to the bottom of the page to see the questions and answers. Here's the link from Family History Daily that helps to explain it all:<br />

And now we can "my, how the FTM turns"!. According to the Ancestry.com blog, the Family Tree Maker program has found a new home at Software MacKiev, a company that's kept the Mac version of FTM going for the last 6 years. According to the agreement, we FTM users will still be able to connect FTM to Ancestry.com. It will also be available for those who use Roots Magic. <br />
This is certainly a sigh of relief for all us who have been mourning FTM. Below are the links to the Ancestry blog and the Software MacKiev website. Oh happy day!!<br />

<br />
As all genealogists know, the US Census records can be a gold mine of information. Often used as the first record to use in researching our ancestors, the records provide family information--names, ages, birth years and locations, marital status, occupations, and much more. However, our biggest Census heartbreak is the almost total loss of the 1890 Census, mainly caused by a fire, water, and smoke damage. Only a few pages survived.<br />
Back in 1996, the National Archives (NARA) published a three-part article discussing the fate of the census. Below are the links to all three parts (part 3 are reference notes). Enjoy!<br />

Happy New Year! <br />
It's time to make your New Year's resolutions--so why not make a resolution to attend the Southern California Genealogy Society's annual Jamboree? It all starts on Thursday, June 2nd with the one-day Genetic Genealogy conference, followed by the full Jamboree weekend (June 3rd to the 5th). The comments/discussions range from heartbreak, disappointment, questioning the business practices of Ancestry.com, and some considering cancelling their Ancestry membership. In short, it's been a whirlwind week!<br />
Among the many blogs posted is Judy Russell's <em>The Legal Genealogist </em>blogpost of her thoughts about Family Tree Maker. She blogged on the best recommendations and alternatives to Ancestry's announcement. I certainly agree with her, including looking at two fantastic software programs--RootsMagic and Legacy Family Tree. No, you don't have stop using Family Tree Maker, but should you decide to switch programs, give these two programs a look. <br />
Here's Judy's blog:<br />

It will no longer be sold after this year. I have been using the program since the late 1980's, long before Ancestry bought the program. It has always been a sturdy program, and one of the best in the industry. A truly sad day for the FTM users. <br />

Here's the Ancestry blog notice:<br />
Posted by Kendall Hulet on December 8, 2015 in Family Tree Maker Ancestry is proud to have made a significant investment this year to bring valuable new content and records to the Ancestry site. In 2015, we’ve made 220 million searchable historical records from Mexico available, more than 170 million pages from the largest collection of U.S. will and probate records, among others. We’ve also introduced new features such as Ancestry Academy and major advancements for AncestryDNA. We remain dedicated to helping people gain new levels of understanding about their lives, and who and what led to them, harnessing the information found in family trees, historical records and genetics. As a company, we’re also continually evaluating ways to focus our efforts to provide the most impact and best product experience for our users through our core offerings. True to this focus, we’ve taken a hard look at the declining desktop software market and the impact this has on being able to continue to provide product enhancements and support that our users need. With that, we’ve made the decision to stop selling Family Tree Maker as of December 31, 2015. Our subscription business and website, on the other hand, continue to grow and we are doubling down our efforts to make that experience even better for our Ancestry community. Ancestry will continue to support current owners of Family Tree Maker at least through January 1, 2017. During this time, all features of the software, including TreeSync™, will continue to work, and Member Services will be available to assist with user questions. We will also address major software bugs that may occur, as well as compatibility updates. These changes are never easy, but by focusing our efforts, we can concentrate on continuing to build great products for our loyal Ancestry community. If you have inquiries regarding Family Tree Maker, please reach out to our Member Services team. We’ll also provide updates on our blog as needed leading up to January 1, 2017. - See more at: <a href="http://blogs.ancestry.com/ancestry/2015/12/08/ancestry-to-retire-family-tree-maker-software/#sthash.bIUwRwfq.dpuf">http://blogs.ancestry.com/ancestry/2015/12/08/ancestry-to-retire-family-tree-maker-software/#sthash.bIUwRwfq.dpuf</a><br />
